What an IMEI lookup concerns
The IMEI identifies cellular equipment and may be used for carrier, compatibility, or blocklist inquiries. Results vary by source and do not necessarily cover every carrier or database.
What Activation Lock concerns
Activation Lock is tied to Find My and the Apple Account associated with a device. When it is active, setup can ask for the linked account even if an IMEI report shows no carrier or blacklist problem.
Check a used phone directly
Ask the seller to erase the iPhone. Begin setup and connect to Wi-Fi. If setup asks for a previous owner’s Apple Account, stop and ask the seller to remove it. Separately confirm carrier eligibility with the relevant carrier.
Remember the distinction
