What an IMEI is
IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. It identifies cellular radio equipment on mobile networks. Depending on the lookup provider and data available, an IMEI check may report limited information such as a network blocklist status or carrier-related details. Coverage and accuracy vary.
What an IMEI does not establish
An IMEI lookup is not proof that you own a device, does not reveal the credentials for an Apple Account, and does not change the Activation Lock state associated with Find My. A clean carrier or blacklist result does not mean an iPhone is ready to activate.
What to do if a device is locked
For your own account, use Apple’s recovery process. For a used device, contact the seller and ask the previous owner to remove it from their account; return it if they cannot. If you have valid proof of purchase, see Apple’s Activation Lock support request.
Be cautious with paid unlock promises
