What is an IMEI?
IMEI means International Mobile Equipment Identity. It is a number used to identify cellular equipment on mobile networks. A standard IMEI has 15 digits: a device identifier followed by a check digit. The check digit can catch some typing errors, but it does not prove that a device or IMEI is genuine.
How our IMEI check works
First, the checker verifies that the submitted value contains 15 digits and passes the Luhn check-digit calculation. It then uses the first 8 digits—the Type Allocation Code (TAC)—to search this site’s local catalog. The catalog can return a brand and model description when it has a matching entry. No external device-status provider is queried.
What an IMEI check result tells you
A format result means only that the number has the expected length and checksum. A TAC match means the local catalog associates that 8-digit prefix with a model description. The selected country and network are information you enter; the checker does not discover the device’s current carrier from its IMEI.
What this IMEI checker does not check
This site does not check whether the full IMEI is authentic, lost or stolen, blacklisted, carrier locked, Activation Locked, reported as financed, or eligible for unlocking. Those results require separate, current data from the relevant carrier, Apple, or an authorized status provider. A model match is not a device-status report.
What is a TAC lookup?
The TAC is the first 8 digits of an IMEI and is allocated to identify a device model and brand owner. Our lookup catalog is community-sourced, so records can be missing, inconsistent, or outdated. Device type and year may not be listed for every model. Confirm a model using the manufacturer’s model number and documentation. GSMA explains its official IMEI and TAC database.
Can an IMEI check unlock a phone?
No. An IMEI number cannot remove Apple Activation Lock. Carrier unlocking is a separate process handled by the carrier that applied the network restriction. The carrier decides whether the device and account qualify. Read our carrier and network unlock guide for the official route.
Checking a used device before buying
Ask the seller to show the device working, confirm the model in its settings, and complete its normal setup with you present. For an iPhone or iPad, if setup requests a previous owner’s Apple Account, ask that owner to remove the device before purchase. Separately ask the carrier that locked the phone whether it can be used on your intended network. Do not rely on an IMEI report as a substitute for these checks.
Share your IMEI carefully
Only provide an IMEI when there is a clear need and you trust the recipient. Our checker sends the number to this site to validate its format; the application does not store the full IMEI or send it to an outside lookup provider. Never share an Apple Account password, device passcode, recovery key, or verification code with an unlock service.
Does a valid IMEI mean the device is genuine?
No. A valid checksum catches some input errors; it does not authenticate the handset or prove that the IMEI was legitimately assigned.
Can an IMEI show the phone’s current carrier?
Not in this checker. You select a network yourself, and that selection is not detected from the IMEI.
Can an IMEI remove iCloud or Activation Lock?
No. Activation Lock must be resolved through the account owner, previous owner, or Apple’s supported process when applicable.
Does this site provide a blacklist check?
No. We do not access a live lost/stolen or blacklist database. Contact the relevant carrier or an authorized status provider for supported checks.
