1. Inspect the device

Check the display, buttons, cameras, speakers, charging port, and battery condition. Confirm the model and storage match the listing. Ask about repairs and included accessories.

2. Confirm it is ready for a new owner

Ask the seller to erase the iPhone. Begin setup and connect to Wi-Fi. Do not buy if it shows “iPhone Locked to Owner” or asks for the previous owner’s account. Have the seller remove it from Find My and retry setup.

3. Ask about carrier restrictions

A carrier lock is separate from Activation Lock. Confirm network eligibility with the carrier that locked the phone, especially if you plan to use another carrier or travel internationally.

4. Keep buyer protection

Use a payment method and marketplace with a clear dispute process. Save the listing, receipt, seller messages, and device identifiers. Avoid paying for a promised bypass after the sale.
