Start with a trusted Apple device

If you still have an iPhone, iPad, or Mac already signed in to your account, use its account settings to change the password. Apple identifies a trusted device as the easiest reset route in many cases.

Use Apple’s recovery site if needed

Go directly to iforgot.apple.com and follow its steps. If Apple needs time to verify your identity, the waiting period is part of its security process. Support cannot necessarily shorten it.

Keep verification details private

Never give an unknown person your password, device passcode, recovery key, or two-factor verification code. Apple’s recovery process should be started through Apple’s official website or device settings, not a third-party unlock service.

Account recovery is separate from Activation Lock

Recovering your Apple Account may let you use the credentials associated with your own device. It does not transfer ownership of a second-hand device linked to another person. For that, contact the previous owner or Apple if you have qualifying purchase documentation.
